Law Firm SEO

SEO for Australian law firms – ranking in a YMYL category

Law firm SEO is not the same as SEO for a retail ecommerce store or a local tradesperson. Google treats legal content as Your Money Your Life (YMYL) material, meaning every page on your site competes against a higher E-E-A-T bar than most businesses. We build that bar into your site from the first audit.

Dezign Legal has one focus: getting Australian law firms to rank for the queries that generate enquiries. Not vanity keywords. Not traffic that never converts. The specific, commercial-intent queries your future clients type into Google in the weeks before they pick up a phone.

What law firm SEO actually involves in 2026

Technical SEO foundations

Before any content strategy matters, your site has to be crawlable, fast, and structurally sound. We audit and remediate:

On-page optimisation

Every page gets intentional targeting. We move firms from “generic services page” to “practice-area pages structured around genuine client intent”:

E-E-A-T and authority building

Google Quality Rater Guidelines treat legal content with heightened scrutiny. Every article needs demonstrable authorship, expertise, and institutional backing. We build these signals systematically:

Local SEO for each office

A law firm with multiple offices needs a LocalBusiness entry per location, each with complete NAP consistency, proper Google Business Profile optimisation, review strategy, and location-specific landing pages. We handle all of it.

Content production that ranks

Thin 500-word “blog posts” written by generalist copywriters will not rank against the Lawyers Weekly archive or established firm content libraries. Our content strategy produces authority-grade pieces matched to the commercial-intent queries your practice areas actually face. Read more about our content approach.

Why legal SEO is harder than regular SEO

YMYL classification

Legal content falls under Google Your Money Your Life category alongside health, finance, and public safety content. Google Quality Rater Guidelines specifically call out legal advice as requiring high E-E-A-T. In practice this means: anonymous articles will not rank. Author-attributed content from credentialled lawyers will.

AI Overviews and Featured Snippets

Legal queries increasingly surface AI Overviews and featured snippets before organic results. Content has to be structured to be extractable and attributable. FAQPage schema, clearly-answered questions in H2/H3 format, and citation-friendly structure are now ranking factors, not nice-to-haves.

Competitor landscape

Your competitors include not just other firms but also legal directories (Lawyers.com.au, LawPath), publishers (LegalVision content hub), and comparison sites. Outranking them requires deeper content depth than most firms publish.

Compliance-aware copywriting

The Legal Profession Uniform Conduct Rules and state-specific Solicitors Conduct Rules restrict how lawyers can advertise their services. Claims about specialisation, outcome guarantees, and comparative performance need careful handling. We write with these constraints from the start.

The Dezign Legal SEO approach

Month one – audit and foundations

Full technical audit (we use our own audit stack – Lighthouse, CrUX, schema validation, GSC, GA4, keyword research). Priority remediation plan delivered in writing. Tracking rebuilt if needed. Baseline rankings captured.

Months two and three – fixes ship

Technical fixes go live. Schema deployed. First practice-area landing pages restructured. Local SEO tightened across all office locations. First content published. GBP optimisation for each office.

Months four to six – authority builds

Content cluster completes for first targeted practice area. Second cluster begins. Link building accelerates (digital PR, industry placements). Rankings measurably improve; first enquiry lift typically visible by month four or five.

Ongoing

Monthly strategy call. Monthly report covering rankings, traffic, conversions, enquiries. Continuous content publishing. Periodic technical re-audits.

Practice areas we commonly target

Every practice area has its own content cluster strategy, its own local-SEO angle, and its own competitive dynamic. We tune accordingly.

SEO reporting – the metrics that matter

We do not send 40-page reports nobody reads. Every month you get a two-page summary covering:

If you want a bigger report, we will produce it on request. Most firms prefer brevity.

Frequently asked questions

How long before we see ranking movement?

60-90 days for measurable ranking shifts on existing pages. New content typically takes 3-6 months to rank. First enquiry lift usually visible by month four or five.

Do we need to write content ourselves?

No. We write. Your team reviews and approves before publication. Alternatively, if your firm has a strong content producer already, we can operate as technical and strategic support while you produce.

Will you guarantee page one rankings?

No. No legitimate agency guarantees rankings, and any that do are either misrepresenting or planning to manipulate Google in a way that eventually penalises you. What we guarantee is the execution – every deliverable lands on time, every technical fix ships, every content piece meets quality standards.

What if our current site is a disaster?

Most sites we take over need technical remediation first. In extreme cases (site speed under 30/100, no schema, broken information architecture), we recommend a website rebuild before SEO retainer. Read our website rebuild approach.

Can we do SEO without a blog?

Partially. Practice-area landing pages alone can rank for commercial queries. But the informational queries that drive awareness and link-building (where a barrister is, how family law works, what conveyancing costs) require content. Firms that publish consistently outperform firms that do not, all else equal.

Do you do link building?

White-hat only. Guest posts on legal industry publications, directory submissions to Lawyers.com.au and similar, digital PR, broken-link outreach. Never PBNs, never paid placements on low-quality sites. A single penalty would take years to recover from.

Can we leave at any time?

Yes. 30 days notice, month-to-month. We keep clients because the work is working, not because they are locked in.

Request an SEO audit

Every new engagement starts with an audit. You can commission an audit without committing to a retainer – $995 once off, delivered in 10 business days, written report with prioritised fixes. If you later engage us on a retainer, we credit the audit fee against the first month.
